It is very sad that deputy-governors have been made by their bosses to be bench warmers. They are hardly seen executing any meaningful functions and this makes many of us to think about the rationale behind the creation of the office of the Deputy-governors, since their presence at best creates enmity and rivalry with the governors.
I wonder why despite the ongoing efforts to amend our defect constitution,no one cares to look at the role of Deputy-governors in the affairs of our country. I don’t think the 1999 constitution has specifically addressed the functions of Deputy-governors.This lack of constitutional backing, makes the deputy-governors at the mercy of Governors.
From 1999 when we resumed civilian rule to date, it shows disgraceful treatment of Deputy governors. Governors have made the position of deputy governors as redundant and useless. Deputy-governors in Nigeria do...

As a result of the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorates of Nigeria in 1914 by the British Colonialist, Sir Fredrick Lord Lugard, a federating state called Nigeria came into existence. This same entity won independence from Britain on the 1st of October 1960. Based on development, one can say that what Nigeria actually got from Britain was mere political independence. To this end, the Britain withdrew their governance of the country and handed over same to Nigerians.
A thorough study of Nigeria’s history reveals at a glance that our past leaders moulded Nigeria with great zeal for success. This was based on the way and manner they collectively fought and achieved political independence for Nigeria. However, it is a truism to say that these crops of leaders exhibited leadership qualities and moral pedigree as well as professionalism that is lacking in our current politicians and...

It was like a joke, many people did not believe that expert predictions will come so soon. And when the heavens were opened the children of Abraham were devastated. It is flood, and flood everywhere. The result of the flood was the displacement of several hundreds of thousands of people. This is the situation in Kaduna and other parts of the North. From Borno to Adamawa, Yobe to Kano, Bauchi to Plateau, Benue to Kogi, Birnin Kebbi to Niger and Sokoto to Zamfara, it was all stories of flood.
In all these places residential houses and public structures have been either washed away or submerged by the devastating flood, rendering several thousands of people homeless while property worth billions of naira have been destroyed. Though at the time of writing this report, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) was yet to come out with the estimated amount of money property lost to flood worth, financial gu...

When somebody gave the story to the press sometime ago that N2billion was found in Malam Abubakar Atiku Kigo, the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Head of Service, currently standing trial on the alleged pension scam, it was obvious that mischief was in the mix judging from the timing and the way the story was spinned.
Interestingly, unfolding events are beginning to confirm my initial suspicion that the story was planted ab initio to incriminate him and convict him even before his trial. In the first place, the story failed the most crucial test of journalism: attribution. The story was merely credited to an EFCC source.
As maintained by his lawyers since the story was first published, Kigo has vehemently denied the purported discovery of N2billion in his house and has even challenged anyone with proof to the contrary to come forward.
It is also noteworthy that neither the EFCC which was quoted as cond...

Former House of Representatives Speaker, Alhaji Ghali Umar Na’Abba made headline news in an interview he granted Leadership Sunday Newspaper recently. He made certain remarks about President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration and concluded that the North may not vote him to power in 2015.
Ordinarily, his remarks would not have needed any commentary except the need to correct certain misrepresentations in the interview. By all accounts, the former speaker is entitled to his opinion as a fundamental right. However, to appropriate that right on behalf of others particularly those he described as Northerners instantly raises questions about legitimacy and authority.
It will be necessary here to recap Na’Abba’s contention which one is tempted to believe stems from a deep sense of disappointment over certain personal losses rather than some altruistic motives which he succeeded in bringing to the public ...

There is no good deed in Nigeria unless it involves foreign contracts. We should not be surprised that the pressing need of Federal Government to improve one year training for medical residents is to send them abroad. Under the cover of recommendation by Rowland-Egba committee, to save us from heart attack and stroke: “with the rest of the world, we are paying greater attention to non-communicable diseases”. Actually, there is a sharp resurgence in the management of communicable diseases in the western world. Even if Nigeria heart attack and stroke are more of our problem than communicable disease, which is not, we need to stop indulging in western food at exorbitant cost to our economy.
What our local doctors need in that case, are African trained nutritionists to teach medical students how to prevent stroke and heart attack.
One of the biggest problems in Primary Health Care Unit of the Federal Gover...

Your excellency, I am very happy for the good work you are doing in Anambra State. I appreciate your efforts to invest in what we know that works. May the good Lord guide, protect and give you knowledge and wisdom with which to impact positively on the lives of our people which will ultimately put smile on their faces for delivering on your campaign promise.
I am writing this letter to you on behalf of Ogwuaniocha people in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, who have suffered decades of neglect in many ways by previous and current administration. Ogwu-Aniocha , my town has remained one of the food baskets of Anambra State. For instance, these communities ; Umu-Nekpu, Umu-Ngasi, Umu-Ezeoma, Umu-Eleke and Oblo, do convey on daily basis an average of 100 tonnes of food items through Ihiala and other parts of the state, instead of Atani, the headquarters of Ogbaru because of the impassable nature of Atani road among othe...

Please, kindly permit me a space in your widely read newspaper to express my views on the ongoing fuel scarcity dotting the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Needless to say the whole thing revolves round the fuel subsidy palaver, recent media reports have indicated that the Federal Government is, more than ever before, determined to sanitise the oil sector. This is evident in the government’s resolve not to protect those indicted by the report of the Federal House of Representatives’ adhoc committee that recently probed the fuel subsidy regime.
The ongoing strike by the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) is a clear indication that some cabals are out to frustrate all efforts towards ridding the nation’s oil sector of its rot. Otherwise, how would the union continue to blackmail the government over the alleged non-payment of subsidy of its members, especially when many of these oil marketers have bee...

Although Katsina State has a traceable history of progress since its creation, some hindrances were observed in facets which include; education, youth empowerment, abandoned projects, heath care delivery, roads construction among others. Some administrations in the past including the military regime, did the little best they could in order to overcome these menace. But the positive changes could only be recorded during the Barrister Ibrahim Shehu Shema led administration.
Many people including myself, had initially rejected Ibrahim Shema solely for political reasons, but the manner in which he begin to transform the state within a shortest possible time manipulate some progress loving indigene and inhabitants of the state to throw out arms and face reality, not to hide behind mere politics and keep fighting what a common man will reminiscent and shed tears someday. I opt to see and acknowledge seeing, but not ...
