The championship which is being organized by Centre for Sports Excellence in collaboration with FCT Handball Association is sponsored by the Office of Special Assistant to the President on Physical & health and supported by Nigeria Handball Veterans Association.
According to a statement from the chairman of the Local Organizing Committee Bala Mohammed shows that eight male and six female teams have confirmed their participation.
The male teams are the defending champions Safety Shooters of Abuja, Key Boys (Nigeria Prisons), Civil Defence, Sokoto State, Lagos State, Kano State, Benue state and Kaduna State while the female teams are Plateau State, Kaduna State, Lagos State, Civil Defence, Road Safety and Imo State.
While commenting on this year’s championship, Bala Mohammed said that it was targeted to be the final preparatory ground before the forthcoming National Sports Festival in Lagos, pointing out that they received more than 14 requests from teams only that they were restrained by the facilities they have.
He stated that this is the biggest handball championship ever to organize in the country this year stating that it’s a great limp from last year’s edtion.
“Right now, we are battling to provide needed facilities for the fourteen team and as soon as we accommodate them we will still look at other requests. This year’s championship will be exceptional in the area of quality of teams, prizes and other logistics that has made this championship an epic annual ritual.
“We have been following closely the preparations of the participating teams and I hope that come 20th of October, the city of Abuja will witness the best of handball,” he concluded.
It would be recalled that Road Safety Shooters are the defending Champions of both male and female categories and going by their track records, they are poised once again to repeat the feat the achieved last year.
